Inspiring Local Climate Action: The Halton Environmental Network

In a sphere where passion for ecological protection drives environmental organizations, Halton Environmental Network (HEN) provides a stable foundation for over 50 non-profit environmental groups, committees, and organizations. Established in 2004, HEN is an incorporated non-profit organization servicing Oakville, Burlington, Milton, and Halton Hills. HEN’s member groups range from very small, grassroots groups to large organizations, representing all parts of Halton Region.

HEN supports and enhances the capacity for local climate action and environmental sustainability across communities. HEN brings together relevant parties to drive change and facilitates communication, cooperation, resources and alignment with community members, Conservation Authorities, non-profits, faith-based organizations, government, and educational sector. HEN provides workshops, community educational outreach programmes, and waste diversion and mitigation initiatives for organizations, businesses, and events at no charge.

HEN has successfully implemented several programs including Halton Green Screens, Greening Sacred Spaces Halton-Peel, the HEN Ambassador Program, and the OakvilleReady program. HEN is also the backbone agency of the Halton Climate Collective.

Halton Green Screens (HGS) aims to inspire environmental stewardship and raise awareness of environmental issues through film. HGS facilitates outdoor movie screenings, school documentary viewings, runs waste diversion programs, and regularly showcases environmental films at Film.ca.  HGS encourages individuals of all ages to showcase their talents and voice within our third annual Amateur Film Festival 2020, and will provide guidance in schools for students who would like to participate.

Greening Sacred Spaces Halton-Peel (GSS) works with faith-based organizations in the Halton community to stimulate interest and action in energy efficiency and conservation, eco-mindfulness, native landscaping, and other valuable workshops with topics ranging from gardens to natural care. GSS also has energy benchmarking programs that they offer to faith communities free of charge to help them be more environmentally conscious and save money.

The HEN Ambassador Program is for secondary students in the community of Halton who want to make a difference in their school community. HEN Ambassadors lead an environmental initiative of their choice, with the support of HEN, and have the opportunity to network and connect with other Ambassadors.

OakvilleReady is an initiative to create Oakville neighbourhood extreme weather resiliency hubs, using places of worship and other neighbourhood organizations as engagement and care anchors. The goal is to create an Oakville resiliency hub network that engages diverse community stakeholders to increase community capacity and understanding around how we can work to support each other during extreme weather events.

The Halton Climate Collective (HCC) is a group of organizations focused on transforming Halton into a low-carbon, climate-resilient community. The HCC is comprised of partners including: Conservation Halton, Town of Oakville, Town of Halton Hills, City of Burlington, Town of Milton, Halton District School Board, Halton Region, Halton Catholic District School Board, University of Waterloo and The Halton Environmental Network.
